When comparing organic cotton to rayon, it's important to note that rayon is not actually a type of cotton at all. Rather, rayon is an artificial fiber made from petroleum-based materials such as polyester or nylon. Rayon does not biodegrade like natural fabrics such as organic cotton, which means it has a higher environmental impact than organic cotton. Additionally, rayon is not as breathable as organic cotton and can often be less comfortable to wear.

Yarn-dyed fabrics often have a classic and timeless appeal. Traditional patterns like tartan or gingham are examples of enduring designs created through yarn-dying processes.

Count Hilaire von Chardonnet, a French scientist and industrialist, was credited for making the first marketable synthetic fiber in 1884. Unfortunately, the fabric was flammable, so it didn’t take off. The German Bemberg Company developed a safer process for producing rayon in 1890, referred to as cuprammonium.
