Mercerization:
Cotton products (yarn, fabric) are treated with concentrated caustic soda solution under tension, and then the caustic soda is washed off under tension.
Alkali shrinkage:
Cotton products are treated with concentrated caustic soda solution under a relaxed state to make the yarn or fabric shrink arbitrarily, and then the caustic soda is washed off, also known as tension-free mercerization.
Part 1 Purpose of Mercerizing
1. After mercerization, the gloss and brightness are improved;
2. The adsorption capacity and chemical reaction capacity are enhanced, and the dye yield is increased;
3. The shrinkage rate, dimensional stability, and fabric flatness are improved;
4. The strength, elongation and other mechanical properties of clothing are changed.
Part 2 Mercerizing Process
Classification by process:
1. Bleaching before silking:
Good mercerizing effect, clean waste alkali, but poor whiteness, easy to stain, suitable for colored cloth, especially heavy fabrics.
2. Silking before bleaching:
Good whiteness, but poor gloss, fabrics are easily damaged during bleaching, suitable for bleached cloth and printed cloth.
3. Mercerizing after dyeing:
Suitable for varieties that are easy to scratch or difficult to dye evenly (after mercerizing, the fabric feels harder and dyes faster). When dyeing dark colors, in order to improve the surface effect and dyeing fastness of the fabric, as well as some varieties with high gloss requirements, mercerizing after dyeing can also be used. (PS: Mercerizing after dyeing is selective for dyes)
4. Semi-mercerizing before dyeing, conventional mercerizing after dyeing:
In order to improve the adsorption and chemical reactivity of dyes.
